Clarity Custom is open · The first 20 families also get a private hour with Jay

Every family is an experiment of one. Your college list should be, too.

Within three business days of your intake, your family gets Your Custom Dashboard: a custom analysis, 20 schools to start, and the School Reports and filters you need to understand why they belong.

A quick note about the Clarity System

If you have been reading my emails, you were expecting the Clarity System. I said July, and it isn’t ready. During final testing we found a security problem, and I will not release a self-serve tool until I am confident the information families enter is protected. The System is still coming, still $975, mid-to-late August. What follows is Clarity Custom, the more personalized option I opened first.

You probably already have a list.

There are the schools your athlete knows. The schools a teammate visited. The programs that appear when you sort a recruiting website by one PR.

Then you start adding what actually matters.

What can your family afford? How important is the intended major? Does your athlete want a nationally competitive program, or a place where they can contribute early? How far from home feels right? What if the best academic fit is in a climate they cannot stand?

The list gets longer. The decision does not get clearer.

The hard part is not finding more colleges. It is deciding which colleges deserve your family’s time.

Coach Jay was extremely helpful to our family.

We are well into the recruiting process and needed help navigating aspects like communicating with schools, the best questions to ask, timelines, tips on making hard decisions and more.

Jay’s energy, experience, and wisdom are unparalleled in the industry. If your family needs guidance or advice regarding XC and/or track & field recruiting, Jay is your guy.

— Next Mile Recruiting parent

You are not supposed to become a recruiting analyst just to create a credible starting point. And advice built for another athlete’s PRs, budget, grades, and preferences cannot settle your family’s decision.

The intake is the work you do. It takes about 30 minutes.Tell me what matters and I will tell you where to start.

Finances

What your family is comfortable paying, and whether net price could change things.

Academics

Grades, test scores, intended major, and the level of selectivity that feels right.

Running

Current PRs, likely roster fit, program level, coaching environment, and the role your athlete wants.

Geography

How far from home feels right, which regions appeal, and whether being near family matters.

Campus life

School size, setting, climate, and the kind of community your athlete wants to live in.

Still unsettled

The questions your family has not answered yet. Those shape the list more than the answered ones.

Your three business days start when your intake arrives, not when you pay. Take the time to fill it out well. The clock does not run while you are thinking.

Now picture opening Your Custom Dashboard.

Start with your custom analysis.

In 20 minutes, you’ll understand why each school belongs, the trade-offs that matter, and where I would begin. Read it straight through, or skim the structure and return when your family is ready to compare.

Your Custom 20, in three groups.

These are the 20 schools I handpick and explain in your custom analysis.

  • The first group is where I would investigate most seriously.
  • The second keeps strong possibilities in view.
  • The third holds the schools worth knowing about before your family closes any doors.

How many schools land in each group follows your intake, not a template.

Your Custom 20 remain distinct from schools your family adds later. Once the Clarity System is available, you may add one group of up to 15 schools. They will appear as Added by Your Family so you can research, filter, and compare as many as 35 schools in one place. Added schools do not receive a second custom analysis.

From there, you can filter and compare. Cost. Academics. Athletics. Division. The variables your family cares about most.

When a school rises to the top, open its detailed School Report. When you are ready to contact a coach, use the coach information, your two personalized email drafts, and my explanation of which race evidence will be easiest for the coach to evaluate.

The information is organized. The first few schools are clear. Your family can finally talk about the decision instead of searching for the next tab to open.

At this point, you really do need to watch the video.

I can explain the intake, your custom analysis, the School Reports, and the filters. But you cannot have a clear understanding of Clarity Custom until you see how they work together inside Your Custom Dashboard.

If you watch the demo and decide Clarity Custom is not for your family, no worries. But you should not make a $1,775 decision without seeing exactly what you would receive.

Watch the concise Clarity Custom demo before deciding whether it’s right for your family.

Your first delivery is ready within three business days of your completed intake.

Business days from intake to dashboard

A clear place to begin. The evidence to go deeper.

From intake to a working starting point.

The clock starts when your completed intake arrives, not when you pay. Within three business days, the hardest first pass is done and your family has a clear place to begin.

1
Tell me what matters.Complete the detailed family intake: PRs, grades, test scores, intended major, cost range, geography, campus preferences, and the questions your family has not settled yet.
2
I review the whole picture.I consider the variables together, select and organize 20 schools, and write a custom analysis explaining why they belong, what remains uncertain, and where I would begin.
3
Open Your Custom Dashboard.Your 20 schools and 20 School Reports are in one usable place, with filters for cost, academics, athletics, division, and the other variables that matter to your family.
4
Start the coach conversation well. You receive two personalized coach-email drafts built around your athlete’s PRs and best race evidence, plus my explanation of what to include and how to make the message easy for a coach to evaluate.

While I build your dashboard, start learning how this actually works.

The custom work gives your family a thoughtful starting point. The course, college coach interviews, and School Reports give you the education and evidence to use it well.

The Course

Learn how the process works while I build your dashboard

Clarity Custom includes the Clarity System course. You can begin with the available core lessons while I build Your Custom Dashboard. The remaining lessons will be added as the Clarity System opens in mid-to-late August.

  • How the recruiting calendar actually works
  • What college coaches evaluate when they read your athlete’s email
  • How to write, follow up, and interpret a coach’s reply
  • How to think about visits, scholarships, net cost, and the final decision

You are not buying a list and being left alone with it.

In-Depth School Reports

20 reports included with your first custom analysis

When a school rises to the top, its School Report is where you go deeper. Roster data. Coach information. Admissions. Academic programs. Cost. Official links. The custom analysis keeps the first step concise; the report gives you the evidence underneath it.

Before your dashboard is delivered, the time-sensitive information and links are reviewed. If a school has not published its newest roster, we say so. If we find an NMR mistake, we correct it.

The course gives you the framework. The interview library lets you hear college coaches explain the process in their own words. D1, D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO coaches talk about what catches their attention, how roster needs shape decisions, what scholarship money actually looks like, and what families should understand before a visit.

You do not need to watch every interview before you begin. Start with the coaches and divisions that match the schools your family is considering, then return to the library as your list gets smaller.

You are hearing directly from the people making these decisions.

Who I am, and why I am personally doing this work.

Jay Johnson, founder of Next Mile Recruiting

I’m Jay Johnson. I spent five years as the recruiting coordinator for the cross country and track teams at the University of Colorado. I was the person inside the office making decisions about which high school athletes to recruit, who to offer money to, and which athletes could join the team.

I’ve coached distance runners for more than 25 years. And right now, I’m a parent. My daughter is a 2027 grad who wants to run in college, so just like you, I’m going through this process.

I built Next Mile because the information families need is scattered across rosters, admissions pages, coaching staffs, and financial aid calculators, and no parent should have to become a recruiting analyst to find it.

For the Founders Launch, I will review your intake, select the schools, write the custom analysis, and assemble Your Custom Dashboard. The tools help me organize the information. The judgment about which schools belong is mine.

I cannot promise that I will personally build every dashboard forever. For these first families, I can promise it completely.

Founder’s Bonus · First 20 Families

A private 60-minute call with me.

This is the reason to enroll early.

First 20 families only

Use the call when it will help your family most.

The first 20 families to enroll in Clarity Custom get a 60-minute call with me, one on one. Most families will wait until they reach a real decision point: when the list is down to four or five schools, when coach replies have changed the picture, or when they are getting ready for their first visit.

Calls begin September 1, 2026. If you are a 2028 or 2029 family, there is no reason to use it before you need it. Your call is good through June 30 of your athlete’s senior year.

I do not plan to sell one-off hours through Next Mile. The Clarity System will not include a call with me. Calls will normally be part of Clarity Advisory. The first 20 Clarity Custom families are the one exception.

After the first 20 families enroll, the call goes away. Clarity Custom does not.
Choose your level of support

The same clear process. A different amount of the work on your plate.

I do the hardest first pass so your family doesn’t have to.

Clarity System is the foundation. Clarity Custom includes the System and adds my first-pass work. Clarity Advisory includes Custom and adds ongoing private guidance.

  • Organized research and clear next steps

Questions families ask before enrolling.

“The Clarity System is coming in August for $975. Why would we pay $1,775 now?”

Because you are buying time and judgment, not more material. The Clarity System gives your family everything you need to build the list yourselves. That work is real. You will sort schools, check rosters, compare net price, and decide what matters most, and it takes most families weeks.

Clarity Custom includes the entire Clarity System, and I do that first pass for you. If your family has the time and wants to run the process yourselves, wait for August and buy the System. I mean that. Custom exists for families who would rather start from a list I have already thought about.

“What if we open the dashboard and disagree with your 20 schools?”

That doesn’t mean the process failed. It means the list has surfaced something your family needs to clarify, which is one reason I give you the analysis instead of just 20 school names.

The intake tells me what matters to you. It does not tell me which of those things wins when they collide, because most families have not decided that yet. Your athlete says cost matters and also wants to run at the highest level they can. Those two pull apart, and where they land is your family’s call, not mine.

That is why I write the analysis instead of just sending a list. You can see how I weighed it. If I put a school in the first group and you know your athlete would never go there, the analysis shows you exactly which assumption I got wrong, and that is worth more than a list you agree with. Tell me in Ask Jay. If something is genuinely off, I will make it right and add schools to your list.

But I am going to hold the line at 20 when I can, and that is part of what you are paying me for. An internet search hands you 100 schools. Getting to a lean, defensible number is the hard work. It is the thing I am actually selling.

This is a new offering, and your family is early. If we find kinks, we will work them out. The 20 are where I would start. They are not a verdict.

“Are you actually doing this, or is software doing it?”

Both, and it only works because of both.

There are roughly a quarter of a million pieces of information in my database. Athlete PRs. Cost of attendance. Coach emails. Links to every cross country and track page for more than 1,600 schools. Nobody filters that by hand, and anyone telling you they do is not telling you the truth. So yes, I have built software, and yes, it uses AI to narrow the field to the schools that could plausibly work for your athlete.

Then I decide which schools belong in your family’s 20, how they should be grouped, what the analysis should say, and where I would begin. That judgment comes from 25 years in the sport and my experience as a Division I recruiting coordinator.

The software isn’t a shortcut around the judgment. It’s what makes the judgment possible. What you’re getting is someone who sat in the recruiting office making these calls, using tools most people in this industry don’t have. That combination is the product.

“Why start with 20 schools?”

Twenty is wide enough to hold real alternatives and narrow enough to actually read. Five feels like a guess. Sixty is the spreadsheet you were trying to escape. Twenty gives your family enough range to compare a reach, a likely fit, and a place your athlete could contribute early, without turning the fall into a research project.

“When does the three-business-day clock start?”

When your completed intake arrives, not when you pay. A Thursday intake is due by Tuesday. A Friday intake is due by Wednesday. If I finish sooner, you get it sooner.

“Can we add schools later?”

Yes, one time, up to 15 schools, and you choose them all at once.

Once the Clarity System is available, you’ll use the Recruiting Compass to decide which additional School Reports you want. This isn’t the same software I use to build your original 20. Email us your additional schools in one list, and within a couple of days we’ll add them to Your Custom Dashboard under Added by Your Family.

Your dashboard can then hold as many as 35 schools, and you’ll be able to research, filter, and compare the schools you added using the same tools you’ve been using with your original 20. Your original 20 receive my custom analysis. Schools added later do not trigger a second custom analysis.

It does have to be one batch. Not three schools now and four more in October. That is how a small team keeps delivering in three days.

“Our athlete is a 2029. Should we buy now?”

Honestly, you are solidly 12 months away from using this in the way a 2028 family will use it.

The reason to buy now anyway is price. Clarity Custom will almost certainly go to $1,975. I am working hard to make it useful enough to justify that, and I am not planning to go past it. Enroll now and you are in at $1,775, with access through June 30 of your athlete’s senior year.

You’ll also get a head start on understanding how the process works. You can watch the course videos, listen to the coach interviews, and begin learning what will matter when it is time to build the list. I’d be careful about adding schools too early, though. Your family is capped at 35 schools, and using those spots before your athlete’s junior-year times come into focus may not be helpful.

To be clear, Next Mile is not going anywhere. If you would rather wait until after the 2027 track season, that is a completely reasonable decision and I will be here.

“Where does everything actually live?”

Two places, and this makes sense the moment you are inside it.

Your Custom Dashboard is a website. You bookmark it and go to it like any other site. That is where your custom analysis, Your Custom 20, the School Reports, and the filters are.

The Clarity System is a separate site, and also an app on your phone. That is where the course videos, the college coach interviews, and the Ask Jay section live.

So when you have a question, you ask it in Ask Jay inside the Clarity System, not inside your dashboard. I answer there a couple of times each week, through September 15, 2026. I cannot promise open-ended access to me for two years at this price, and I would rather give you a real date than a vague promise. Families who want ongoing one-on-one guidance can enroll in Clarity Advisory. Broken links, access problems, and incorrect NMR information get fixed regardless of the date.

“Your Custom Dashboard is new. Should we be worried about that?”

It is new, and the risk is lower than it sounds.

Your dashboard is not self-serve software you are stress-testing on your own. I build it one family at a time, by hand, and I look at it before you do. That is the whole reason I opened Clarity Custom ahead of the Clarity System. The custom version lets me be the last set of eyes on every delivery.

That said, you’ll be among the first families using it. If something doesn’t look right, a link doesn’t go where it should, or a number seems off, email me. I work six days a week. This isn’t something where you’ll report a problem on Monday and wait until the following Monday to hear from me. I want to know about it, and I’ll address it quickly. That hands-on support is part of what you get by enrolling early.

“Do you contact college coaches for us?”

No. Your athlete should own the recruiting relationship, because that relationship is what the coach is actually evaluating. I identify the right contacts, organize the strongest race evidence, and write two personalized starting drafts. Your athlete checks the details, rewrites them in their own voice, and hits send.

“What if a coach leaves or the roster changes?”

We scan all 1,600 schools multiple times a year to keep coaching staffs current. The changes cluster after cross country season, in the winter, again in the summer, and into the fall, so at any given moment we may be a month or two behind on a specific school. In practice you will find this is as accurate as what is posted on the school’s own site. If the school has not announced a change, we do not know about it either.

If NMR made a mistake, we fix it. What is not included is new analysis after your athlete’s times, priorities, or list change. That ongoing interpretation is what Clarity Advisory is for.

“Is this right for every track and field athlete?”

Not yet. This version is built for athletes whose primary events are 800m through 3200m, plus cross country. It is not built for sprinters, hurdlers, throwers, or jumpers. If that is your athlete, do not buy this.

“Do you offer refunds if we are unhappy?”

No, and here is the honest reason. Your custom analysis, Your Custom 20, and your 20 School Reports are built for your family. Once that work is done and you have the information, there is no way to hand it back. I am not going to pretend otherwise.

What I will do is make it right. We cannot run a business without happy families. If the list misses something important about your athlete, if a report has an error, if the dashboard is not working the way it should, tell us and we will do every reasonable thing to fix it. The one thing we cannot do is make your athlete run faster. Everything else, we want to hear about.
