For Parents of High School Distance Runners

Your athlete wants to run in college.

You shouldn’t have to spend a season becoming a recruiting expert to help make that dream a reality.

It’s easy to come up with a long list of possible schools. What’s hard is knowing which 20 or 25 are actually worth your family’s time.

Clarity Custom is that answer, done for you. After you submit your completed intake, I build a private Clarity Dashboard around your athlete: the handpicked school list, my analysis of why each school belongs, an in-depth School Report for every school on it, and the first two coach emails already drafted. Your Dashboard is delivered within five business days for a 2027 graduate and 10 business days for a 2028 or 2029 graduate. Only your family has the link.

Jay Johnson, founder of Next Mile Recruiting
Jay Johnson Founder · Former D1 Recruiting Coordinator

Your family doesn’t need 50 more college names.

Cross-country season is about to start. If your athlete is a 2027 grad, you’re probably feeling anxious about what to do next—emailing coaches, figuring out which schools you should visit, and even whether your athlete should miss a meet to visit a school.

If your athlete is a 2028 grad, you may feel something different: you’re ready to get moving, but you don’t want to waste months researching the wrong schools.

Either way, you want to get going.

You probably already have a list.

There are the schools your athlete knows. The programs a teammate visited. The colleges that appeared when you searched one PR on a recruiting website.

Then you start adding what actually matters.

  • What can your family afford?
  • Does the school have the intended major?
  • Is your athlete likely to be recruited, allowed to join, or left outside the roster cap?
  • Do they want a nationally competitive program, or a place where they can contribute earlier?
  • How far from home feels right?
  • What happens when the best athletic fit and the best academic fit aren’t the same school?

The list gets longer, but the process isn’t getting any clearer.

Picture where this usually ends up. It’s 10:30 on a Sunday night. There’s a spreadsheet you made to organize this process—40 rows and nine columns. You’ve got a browser full of roster pages open. You’ve put in real hours, and you’re no closer to knowing which coaches your athlete should be emailing.

And when you finally go to bed, there’s the thought that bothers you. You worry that two years from now you’ll learn there was a school that would’ve been a great fit, a coach who would’ve wanted your athlete—and you never found it, because nobody handed you the map.

That outcome is avoidable. But you don’t avoid it by collecting more names. You avoid it by knowing which 20 or 25 schools actually deserve your family’s time, and by getting to that answer while the calendar is still your friend.

You shouldn’t be expected to be an expert to help your athlete achieve their goal of running in college.

This is the problem Clarity Custom can solve for you. It gives your family clarity on the next logical steps, customized to your athlete’s athletic opportunities, their academic interests, what your family can afford, and the other priorities that matter to you.

Now imagine a different night at the kitchen table.

After you submit your completed intake, you open a link I send you within the delivery window for your athlete’s graduation year. Now you’ve got your Clarity Dashboard, built for one family, yours.

The first thing you read is a custom analysis that explains which schools made your list and why. Below it are the schools themselves, 20 or 25 of them, each with an in-depth School Report. And alongside them are two coach emails, already drafted around your athlete’s strongest races, waiting for your athlete to put them in their own voice and send them.

The research project ends before your family ever has to start it.

I do the hardest first step. You start with a list you can actually use.

You tell me about your athlete’s running, academics, budget, geography, and preferences. I use the data and tools I’ve built, then apply my own judgment as a former D1 recruiting coordinator to decide which colleges deserve your family’s attention first.

What your family gets

Six things are ready when you begin recruiting with Clarity Custom.

This is the finished starting point, not another set of tools your family has to learn before you can use it.

01

20 or 25 handpicked colleges

I select strong possible matches after reading your intake and weighing your athlete’s running, academics, budget, geography, and preferences. This isn’t a list generated from one search.

02

A custom analysis

I explain why each school belongs, which trade-offs matter, what’s still uncertain, and where I’d begin. The work is backed by a database with roughly a quarter of a million pieces of information across more than 1,600 programs.

03 · Every Clarity Custom family

40 School Reports total.

Your athlete’s graduation year determines how many arrive in your first Dashboard. All 40 School Reports are included.

2027 graduate

25 now15 more later

2028 or 2029 graduate

20 now20 more later

A 2027 family needs the broader list because recruiting is already underway. Younger athletes get the remaining School Reports later, when new PRs and clearer preferences make those choices more useful.

When do we get our additional School Reports?

You’ll be able to use your additional reports when Clarity System opens. Every Clarity Custom family will automatically get access to the System. I explain the difference between Clarity Custom and Clarity System below.

04

Two personalized coach emails

I organize your athlete’s strongest race evidence and write two starting drafts. Your athlete checks the details, puts each message in their own voice, and sends it.

05

30 days of direct email access

Your 30 days of direct email access begin when I deliver your Clarity Dashboard. Email me your recruiting questions, and I’ll answer them personally as you begin using the dashboard and contacting coaches.

06

Your Clarity Dashboard

A private dashboard built for one athlete, yours. It keeps the work together in one bookmarkable place you can return to throughout recruiting.

  • Your handpicked school list
  • Your custom analysis
  • Your School Reports
  • Coach information
  • Cost and academic details
  • Filters and comparisons

Look inside before you decide.

Clarity Custom is a real investment, and I don’t want you to buy something you’ve only read about. So here’s the product itself. The screenshot below is a demonstration Clarity Dashboard built with sample data, laid out exactly the way yours will be. Under it, I’ll walk you through each piece, and then you can watch the full video tour.

A demonstration Clarity Dashboard. Yours holds your athlete’s schools, analysis, and School Reports, and it’s private to your family.

The custom analysis.

Do the math on the do-it-yourself version: 20 or 25 schools, an hour or more per school across rosters, cost pages, staff bios, and majors. That’s roughly 40 hours of research. The analysis I write distills it into about 30 minutes of reading.

The handpicked list.

An internet search can hand you 100 schools in ten seconds. I narrow that to 20 or 25 strong possible matches after weighing your athlete’s PRs, event strengths, intended major, budget, desired location, campus preferences, and the type of program where they could realistically contribute. Every school has to defend its place.

The School Reports.

Every school on your list comes with an in-depth School Report: the program, the coaching staff, what attending actually costs, the academics, and what your family should look at before a single email gets sent. These are the documents you’ll bring on visits and reread before decisions.

The filters and comparisons.

Your dashboard lets you compare your schools by cost, academics, athletics, and division, so when the conversation at your kitchen table shifts from “who are they” to “how do they compare,” the answer is already organized.

The two coach emails.

I draft the first two emails your athlete will send, built around their strongest race evidence. This deserves its own explanation, and it gets one in the next section.

The tour below shows all of it working together: the list, the analysis, the School Reports, the filters, and the coach-email drafts. Short on time? The three-minute tour above shows you the heart of it.

100%

Do you have questions? You can always email us at info@nextmilerecruiting.com and we’ll get back to you promptly.

Why I write the first two coach emails for you.

Once you enroll, I send you a detailed intake covering the variables that actually change a college list: your athlete’s running, academics, cost range, geography, campus preferences, and the questions your family is still trying to answer. The same intake tells me what college coaches need to know about your athlete.

When I helped my own daughter write her first college-coach email, the subject line led with a training detail most families would never think to include—specific to her story, the way something in your athlete’s story will be specific to theirs. The finished email was lean. It still took me about 90 minutes to write, because the hard part isn’t the typing. It’s knowing which detail changes how a coach reads a performance, what belongs near the top, and what can be left out.

In Clarity Custom, I learn your athlete’s story, identify the evidence a coach should see first, and write two personalized starting drafts. Your athlete checks the facts, puts each message in their own voice, and sends it. I sent my daughter’s draft to a D1 head coach at a nationally competitive distance program and asked for honest feedback.

“I have ZERO suggestions. Really well done.”

D1 Head Coach · Nationally competitive distance program

One thing to know even if you never enroll: your athlete shouldn’t hide the difficult parts of the story. Before I launched Clarity Custom, I interviewed more than a dozen college coaches, and several told me they value seeing that a high school athlete has dealt with adversity—because adversity is unavoidable at the college level. If injuries or a down season are part of your athlete’s story, I’ll help you frame those details: what happened, what changed, and what the coach should understand about where your athlete is now.

You don’t need a perfect story. You need the real story told honestly and in context.

Your Clarity Dashboard is delivered within five business days for 2027 graduates and 10 business days for 2028 and 2029 graduates after the completed intake is submitted.

A clear place to begin. The evidence to go deeper.

The tools organize the information. The judgment is mine.

Jay Johnson, founder of Next Mile Recruiting

I’m Jay Johnson. I spent five years as the recruiting coordinator for the University of Colorado cross country and track teams. I was inside the office making decisions about which high school athletes to recruit, who to offer money to, and which athletes could join the team.

I’ve coached distance runners for more than 25 years. For more than 20 years, I’ve also built CoachJayJohnson.com to help high school coaches train distance runners. I wrote Consistency Is Key for high school runners and founded the Boulder Running Camps and Boulder Running Clinics.

Right now, I’m also a parent. My daughter is a 2027 graduate who wants to run in college, so I’m going through this process from the family side too.

I built Next Mile because the information families need is scattered across rosters, admissions pages, coaching staffs, and financial aid calculators, and parents shouldn’t have to become recruiting analysts to find it.

Here’s what sits underneath the judgment. The Next Mile database covers more than 1,600 college cross country and track programs, including cost of attendance, coach contacts, roster links, and academic profiles. The software narrows the field to schools that could plausibly work for your athlete. Then I decide which ones belong, how to group them, and what your analysis should say. The software makes judgment at this scale possible. The judgment is still mine.

For Clarity Custom, I’ll read your intake, select the schools, write the analysis, and build your Clarity Dashboard. The tools help me organize the information; every recommendation is mine.

Coach Jay was extremely helpful to our family.

We are well into the recruiting process and needed help navigating aspects like communicating with schools, the best questions to ask, timelines, tips on making hard decisions and more.

Jay’s energy, experience, and wisdom are unparalleled in the industry. If your family needs guidance or advice regarding XC and/or track & field recruiting, Jay is your guy.

Next Mile Recruiting parent

The other ways families do this, and where Clarity Custom sits.

Recruiting websites.

They hand your athlete a database and a profile. The searching, the sorting, and the judgment about which schools actually fit are still your family’s job.

The family spreadsheet.

Free, and it can work—if someone in your house has the hours to build it and the recruiting background to know what the numbers mean.

Clarity Custom.

The research and the first round of judgment, done before you start: a defensible list, the reasoning in writing, and the first two coach emails drafted within five business days for 2027 graduates and 10 business days for 2028 and 2029 graduates.

Three levels of support

I offer three ways for families to work with Next Mile Recruiting.

Clarity System is the do-it-yourself path. The course, the tools, 20 School Reports, and the college coach interviews—your family does the research and builds the list yourselves. It opens in August.

Clarity Custom, open now, is the in-between. The complete foundation, and I do the first big step for you: I review your intake, handpick your 20 or 25 schools, write your custom analysis, draft the first two coach emails, and personally answer your emailed recruiting questions for 30 days beginning when I deliver your Clarity Dashboard.

Clarity Advisory is for families who want ongoing one-on-one help. It adds phone calls and regular direct email support as coach replies, visits, money, and options change throughout recruiting. It opens later this fall. Clarity Custom includes substantial personalized work, but it isn’t that ongoing relationship—Advisory is.

Let me build the right starting list for your family, so you can move recruiting forward now.

Start with a list that’s already been carefully narrowed down.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU ENROLL?

Watch for your intake.

I’ll send it by email shortly after you enroll.

Complete it together.

I recommend that you and your athlete sit down and work through it together. If that takes a day or two, that’s completely fine.

Submit it when you’re ready.

Your delivery window begins after you submit the completed intake: five business days for a 2027 graduate and 10 business days for a 2028 or 2029 graduate.

2028 Families:You can enroll now and wait for the right time to build your Dashboard.

Several 2028 parents have asked whether they should wait until after cross country to enroll. You don’t have to choose between enrolling now and having me use your athlete’s best fall performances.

You can enroll now and hold the intake. Submit it after a faster race during the season, or wait until the season is over and all the fall PRs are in. Your 10-business-day delivery window begins when you submit the completed intake, not when you enroll.

Your 30 days of direct email access begin when I deliver your Clarity Dashboard. If you enroll now while the private 60-minute calls are still available, yours is reserved for your family. You can use it any time between the day you receive your Dashboard and June 30 of your athlete’s senior year.

About the price

Clarity Custom is $1,775 today. Clarity Custom will eventually be $1,975, but I don’t expect that to happen until January 2027. Enrolling now locks in the current price. If waiting is the better decision for your family, wait.

A clear promise

What Clarity Custom can do, and what no one can promise.

What I can promise

A careful, useful starting point.

  • A careful review of the information your family provides
  • A starting list built around your athlete and priorities
  • An explanation of why the schools belong
  • Organized research and clear next steps
  • If the list misses something important, tell me and I’ll make it right
What no one can promise

An outcome no service controls.

  • Admission or coach support
  • A roster spot or scholarship
  • A reply from a coach
  • One objectively perfect college
  • That rosters, coaches, rules, or your athlete’s times won’t change

The Make-It-Right Promise

One promise deserves to be spelled out. If your list misses something important about your athlete, I’ll reread your intake, revise the analysis where I misunderstood, and add schools where they belong. If a School Report has an error, I’ll correct it. If something on your dashboard isn’t working, I’ll fix it. I work six days a week and I answer my own email. The one thing I can’t fix is a race result. Everything else, tell me.

Questions families ask before enrolling.

Why pay $1,775 for Clarity Custom if the Clarity System will be $975?

Because you’re buying time and judgment, not more material.

The Clarity System gives you the information and tools to build the list yourselves. That work is real. You’ll sort schools, review rosters, compare cost, and decide what matters most. For many families, it takes weeks.

Clarity Custom includes those resources, and I do the hardest first step for you. If you’ve got the time and want to do the work yourselves, the Clarity System may be the better fit. Clarity Custom is for families who’d rather begin with a list I’ve already thought about.

Is Clarity Custom right for every track and field athlete?

Not yet.

This version is built for athletes whose primary events are 800m through 3200m, plus cross country. It isn’t built for sprinters, hurdlers, throwers, or jumpers. If that’s your athlete, don’t buy this version.

When will we get our Clarity Dashboard?

Your delivery window begins when you submit your completed intake, not when you enroll or pay. The day you submit doesn’t count as the first business day.

For a 2027 graduate:

  • Monday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than the following Monday.
  • Tuesday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than the following Tuesday.
  • Wednesday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than the following Wednesday.
  • Thursday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than the following Thursday.
  • Friday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than the following Friday.
  • Saturday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives nine days later, on the second Monday after you submit your intake, not 48 hours later.
  • Sunday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives eight days later, on the second Monday after you submit your intake, not 24 hours later.

For a 2028 or 2029 graduate, the schedule is the same, but two weeks later:

  • Monday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than two Mondays later.
  • Tuesday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than two Tuesdays later.
  • Wednesday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than two Wednesdays later.
  • Thursday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than two Thursdays later.
  • Friday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives no later than two Fridays later.
  • Saturday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives 16 days later, on the third Monday after you submit your intake.
  • Sunday: Your Clarity Dashboard arrives 15 days later, on the third Monday after you submit your intake.

Deadlines are the end of the day, Mountain Time. Federal holidays don’t count as business days. If a federal holiday falls within the delivery window, the deadline moves to the next business day.

Are you doing this, or is software and AI doing it?

Both, and the product only works because of both.

The full picture is in the section called The tools organize the information higher on this page.

What if we disagree with the handpicked list?

That doesn’t automatically mean the process failed. It may mean the list surfaced a priority your family hadn’t fully settled.

The intake tells me what matters. It can’t always tell me which priority wins when two good things pull apart. Your athlete may want the strongest program possible and a specific major at a price your family can afford. The right balance belongs to your family.

That’s why I write the analysis instead of sending a list of names. You can see how I weighed the information. If I misunderstood something important, email me. I’ll make it right and add schools where appropriate.

I’ll still keep the first list to 20 or 25 schools. An internet search can hand you 100 names. Getting to a lean, defensible starting point is the work you’re paying me to do.

Do you contact college coaches for us?

No.

Your athlete should own the recruiting relationship because that relationship is part of what the coach is evaluating.

I identify the contacts, organize the strongest race evidence, and write two personalized starting drafts. Your athlete checks the details, rewrites the message in their own voice, and sends it.

How many School Reports will we get?

Every Clarity Custom family gets 40 School Reports total, delivered in two stages.

2027 graduate: 25 School Reports in your first Clarity Dashboard, plus 15 more when Clarity System opens.

2028 or 2029 graduate: 20 School Reports in your first Clarity Dashboard, plus 20 more when Clarity System opens.

I choose the schools your family can act on first. When Clarity System opens, you can use your remaining School Reports as new PRs, academic decisions, and clearer preferences shape the next schools you research.

Schools added later don’t receive a second custom analysis.

Are 2028 and 2029 families getting less?

No. They’re getting the School Reports when the information will be more useful.

You get 20 in your first Clarity Dashboard and 20 more when Clarity System opens. The first 20 give you a focused starting list. By the time you use the remaining 20, your athlete will have stronger PRs, academic decisions, and clearer preferences to guide the research.

Our athlete is a 2029. Should we buy now?

Honestly, you’re about 12 months away from using this the way a 2028 family will use it.

The reasons to enroll now are the founder price, immediate access to the course and coach interviews, the first 20 School Reports, 30 days of direct email access to me, and the Founder's Bonus call if it’s still available. Your Clarity access continues through June 30 of your athlete's senior year.

If you’d rather wait until after the 2027 track season, that’s a reasonable decision. Next Mile will still be here.

When can we use the private 60-minute call?

Most families will wait until the timing is right. Use the call when your list is down to four or five schools, when coach replies have changed the picture, or as you prepare for your first visit.

I don’t plan to sell one-off hours through Next Mile. Calls will normally be part of Clarity Advisory. The first 20 Clarity Custom families are the one exception.

If the private call is still available when you enroll, you can use it any time between the day you receive your Clarity Dashboard and June 30 of your athlete’s senior year. After the first 20 families enroll, the call goes away. Clarity Custom doesn’t.

What if a coach leaves or the roster changes?

We scan all 1,600 schools multiple times a year to keep coaching staffs current. Changes cluster after cross country, during the winter, in the summer, and into the fall. At any given moment, we may be a month or two behind on a specific school.

If the school hasn’t announced a change, we don’t know about it either. If Next Mile made a mistake, we fix it.

What isn’t included is a new custom analysis every time your athlete's times, priorities, or list changes. That ongoing interpretation is what Clarity Advisory is for.

The Clarity Dashboard is new. Should we be worried?

It’s new, and the risk is lower than it sounds.

Your Clarity Dashboard isn’t self-serve software that your family is testing alone. I build it one family at a time, and I look at it before you do. That’s one reason I opened Clarity Custom before the self-guided System.

You’ll be among the first families using it. If something doesn’t look right, a link is broken, or a number seems off, email me. I work six days a week, and I want to know. I’ll address it quickly.

Do you offer refunds?

No, and here’s the honest reason.

The custom analysis, handpicked school list, and first 20 or 25 School Reports are built for your family. Once that work is completed and you’ve got the information, there’s no meaningful way to return it.

What I’ll do is make it right. If the list misses something important about your athlete, a report has an error, or your dashboard isn’t working correctly, tell me. We’ll do every reasonable thing to fix it.

The one thing we can’t do is make your athlete run faster. Everything else, I want to hear about.

What’s the 30 days of direct email access?

Your 30 days of direct email access begin when I deliver your Clarity Dashboard. From that day, you can email me your questions about recruiting, and I’ll answer them personally.

This gives your family a direct place to ask questions as you begin using your Clarity Dashboard, reading the analysis, and contacting coaches.

This is a 30-day founder benefit, not an ongoing one-on-one coaching relationship. Clarity Advisory is for families who want regular answers to family-specific questions throughout recruiting.

What if we want more help later?

Clarity Advisory opens later this fall. It includes one-on-one coaching and ongoing direct email support as coach replies, visits, money, and options change.

Every dollar you invest in Clarity Custom applies toward a future Clarity Advisory enrollment.

Want another look at what your family will receive?

Return to the dashboard tour to see how the school list, analysis, School Reports, filters, and coach-email drafts work together.

Still have questions?

Email me.

Clarity Custom is a significant investment, and I believe it’s worth every penny. This isn’t a hard sell. I want to answer your questions honestly and help you decide whether Clarity Custom is right for your family.

If it is, I’d be glad to do this work. If it isn’t, I’ll tell you that too.

Clarity Custom is right for you if:

Your athlete runs the 800m through the 3200m or cross country, graduates in 2027, 2028, or 2029, and wants to run in college. You want the first big research step done by someone who’s sat in the recruiting coordinator’s chair, and you’d rather start from a defensible list than from a search bar. If that’s your family, Clarity Custom will fit like it was built for you, because it was.

If your family has the time and genuinely wants to do the research yourselves, the Clarity System might be the better value when it opens in August. I’d rather point you to the right door than sell you through the wrong one.

Let me build the right starting list for your family, so you can move recruiting forward today.

Complete the intake. Within five business days for a 2027 graduate or 10 business days for a 2028 or 2029 graduate, your family opens a private Clarity Dashboard with the 20 or 25 schools worth your time, the analysis that explains why they belong, and the first two coach emails ready for your athlete’s voice. The spreadsheet can retire.
