The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) governs high school track and field through 10 geographic sections. The CIF State Championships is a single open meet — all schools compete together regardless of enrollment size.
The Qualification Pathway
Athletes qualify for the CIF State Championships through their section championship. Each of the 10 CIF Sections allocates qualifying spots per a CIF formula. Athletes who meet published at-large standards at their section meet can also earn state meet entry.
10 CIF Sections each allocate qualifying spots per CIF formula.
At-large qualifiers meet published standards at section meets.
State meet is open — no divisions, all schools compete together.
Two-day meet: prelims Friday, finals Saturday (3200m is Friday finals).
9 qualify for finals in running events; up to 12 in field events.
California scores 9 places (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1-0.5).
California does not contest javelin at state.
How fast does your athlete need to run to qualify for the California state meet? What did the state champion run? What about the 9th place finisher?
We pulled four years of CIF heat sheets and state meet results and put them in one place. Every classification. Every event. The qualifying standards, the state champions, and the 9th place finisher. You know exactly what your athletes need to do — to make the meet, to get on the podium, or to become the state champion.

How to Read This Data
Final Qualifier = the final qualifying mark to make the state meet. This is the minimum mark an athlete needed during the season to earn a berth. 1st Place = the state meet champion's actual result. 9th Place = the 9th place finisher at the state meet.
We show every event in full detail below — all years, all classifications, with qualifying standards, state champions, and 9th place finishers.

Subject: College recruiting resource for our athletes
Hi team families,
I wanted to share a resource that I think will be helpful for families who are thinking about college running.
Next Mile Recruiting is run by Jay Johnson, a former Division I recruiting coordinator at the University of Colorado. He's built a system that helps high school distance runners and their families navigate the college recruiting process — from figuring out what level is realistic to communicating with coaches to understanding the timeline.
It's not a recruiting service — it's a resource. They have a lot of free content and tools that are worth checking out, whether your athlete is a freshman just starting to think about it or a junior getting serious.
I trust his work, and I think you'll find it valuable.

Important: BCC info@nextmilerecruiting.com on this email, and we'll send you the download link for all 50 states.
The recruiting process doesn't have to be confusing.

Every event, every year, every classification — organized and ready to share with your staff:
✓ Full analysis for every classification (Open)
✓ Cross-classification comparisons for distance, sprints & hurdles, and field events
✓ Official CIF heat sheets for the last four years
✓ Official state meet results for the last four years
✓ Historical weather conditions for each day of the state meet (every 2 hours)
You won't have to chase down heat sheets and results in late April when you're trying to figure out what marks your kids need to put up to get into the state meet. It's all here.
Next Mile Recruiting helps high school distance runners find the right college program. We work with families to navigate the recruiting process — from building a target list to communicating with coaches to making the right choice.
This data is compiled from official CIF heat sheets and state meet results — all public sources. We do our best to ensure accuracy, but there may be errors. If you find one, please email us at info@nextmilerecruiting.com so we can fix it.
