How California State Track Qualification Works

California is the most administratively complex state in high school track. The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) is the umbrella body, but CIF is split into 10 Sections — Southern, San Diego, Central Section, Central Coast, North Coast, Sac-Joaquin, Northern, Oakland, Los Angeles City, San Francisco — each of which runs its own administrative apparatus and championship meets.

Athletes qualify through their league or area meet, then their section’s prelims/finals, then earn a spot at the CIF State Meet at Buchanan High School in Clovis. The State Meet has four divisions (D1-D4), with all four contested at the same venue over the same weekend in late May. Most of California’s top recruiting talent never makes State Meet — with only ~3 advancing per event per division across the entire state, the section meets are where the bulk of recruiting-relevant performances happen.

This page currently links only the CIF State Meet — the marquee top-tier event. Per-section results pages (NCS, SS, SJS, CS, CIF-CC, SF, OAK, LAC, SD, NS) are coming in a follow-up update that adds support for tier-stratified result links to our schema. For now, the State Meet is below; we’ll surface the section meets as soon as the upgrade ships.

CIF Section Championships

California’s 10 CIF Sections each run their own state-style championship in the weeks before the CIF State Meet. Section meets are where the bulk of California recruiting performances actually happen — the State Meet only takes the top 2-3 per event per division, so most top California talent peaks at the Section level. Below: every CIF Section Championship from 2022–2025. (Two year-section combos — Southern 2022 and San Francisco 2024 — aren’t indexed in MileSplit’s public archive.)

What Next Mile Recruiting actually is

We’re not a recruiting service. We’re education for families.

We help parents understand how college recruiting actually works so they can make a great decision about where their athlete runs in college — and so the conversations they have with you are better informed.

If you’ve been coaching for years or decades, the recruiting landscape has changed dramatically since the House settlement. Roster caps, the transfer portal, scholarship structures — what worked five years ago doesn’t work the same way now. I’ve written a short email series just for high school coaches to get you caught up on what you need to know to help your athletes. Drop your email below.
