How Mississippi State Track Qualification Works

Mississippi has up to seven classifications — 1A through 7A — governed by the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA). The 7A classification was added in 2024; prior years used six classes (1A through 6A). State championships run as combined paired-class meets each year, with the pairings shifting to accommodate classification changes.

Mississippi runs district → state qualifying. Each class has its own districts, with the top finishers from each district advancing. Because classes are paired into combined meets at the state level, athletes in adjacent classes often run together at the same venue on the same day.

MHSAA delegates state meet results to MileSplit Mississippi. The pairings vary year-to-year as classifications evolved. Below: every MHSAA state meet from 2022–2025, with the actual per-year structure preserved.

What Next Mile Recruiting actually is

We’re not a recruiting service. We’re education for families.

We help parents understand how college recruiting actually works so they can make a great decision about where their athlete runs in college — and so the conversations they have with you are better informed.

If you’ve been coaching for years or decades, the recruiting landscape has changed dramatically since the House settlement. Roster caps, the transfer portal, scholarship structures — what worked five years ago doesn’t work the same way now. I’ve written a short email series just for high school coaches to get you caught up on what you need to know to help your athletes. Drop your email below.
