How Illinois State Track Qualification Works
Illinois has three classifications — Class 3A (largest schools), 2A, and 1A — governed by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). The state championships run at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston each May, with all three classes contested over the same weekend.
Illinois runs regional → sectional → state qualifying. Each class has its own regional and sectional structure, with the top finishers from each sectional advancing. Illinois is one of the deepest sprint and distance states in the country, with strong programs concentrated across the Chicago suburbs, Peoria, and Rockford regions.
IHSA delegates state meet results to athletic.net. Below: every IHSA state meet from 2022–2025 — three per-class meets per year, both genders covered at each.
