The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) governs public high school track and field. The state meet features both division-specific events and Championship events where all divisions compete together. NY is unique in running both 1500m and 1600m distances.
The Qualification Pathway
Athletes qualify for the state meet through section qualifying meets. New York has 11 geographic sections. Section winners advance automatically, and second-place finishers advance if they meet published state qualifying standards.
11 geographic sections, each with qualifying meets by division.
Section winners auto-advance to state.
2nd place advances if they beat the state qualifying standard.
State meet is a two-day event (prelims + finals).
Sprint/hurdle events are split by division; distance events merge all divisions.
NY runs BOTH 1500m and 1600m, and BOTH 3000m and 3200m at state.
NY contests steeplechase, hammer throw, javelin, and pentathlon at state.
Federation Championships combine NYSPHSAA + PSAL + CHSAA + NYSAIS.
How fast does your athlete need to run to qualify for the New York state meet? What did the state champion run? What about the 6th place finisher?
We pulled four years of NYSPHSAA heat sheets and state meet results and put them in one place. Below you'll find the full 1500 Meter Run breakdown — every classification, every year, qualifying standards, state champions, and 6th place finishers. Plus 2025 qualifying standards summaries for every other event.

How to Read This Data
Final Qualifier = the final qualifying mark to make the state meet. This is the minimum mark an athlete needed during the season to earn a berth. 1st Place = the state meet champion's actual result. 6th Place = the 6th place finisher at the state meet.
We show the 1500 Meter Run in full detail below. Sprints, hurdles, relays, and field events are summarized with 2025 standards, and the full breakdowns are in the downloadable package.

Subject: College recruiting resource for our athletes
Hi team families,
I wanted to share a resource that I think will be helpful for families who are thinking about college running.
Next Mile Recruiting is run by Jay Johnson, a former Division I recruiting coordinator at the University of Colorado. He's built a system that helps high school distance runners and their families navigate the college recruiting process — from figuring out what level is realistic to communicating with coaches to understanding the timeline.
It's not a recruiting service — it's a resource. They have a lot of free content and tools that are worth checking out, whether your athlete is a freshman just starting to think about it or a junior getting serious.
I trust his work, and I think you'll find it valuable.
[YOUR NAME]
Important: BCC info@nextmilerecruiting.com on this email, and we'll send you the download link for all 50 states.
The recruiting process doesn't have to be confusing.
We're building the definitive resource for college distance running recruiting — for families and the coaches who support them. Join the priority list and we'll let you know when it's ready.
