How New York State Track Qualification Works
New York is administratively the most complex state in high school track. The state is split across three governing bodies: NYSPHSAA (public schools, ~700+ schools across 11 sections), PSAL (NYC public schools), and CHSAA (Catholic schools). Each runs its own state championship.
NYSPHSAA — the largest of the three — runs an outdoor state championship in early June at one of a few rotating venues (Cicero-North Syracuse, Middletown, Webster). All 11 NYSPHSAA sections feed into the championship; the meet uses two divisions (Division 1 for large schools, Division 2 for smaller schools) but both compete at the same venue. Athletes qualify through their section meet — e.g., Section V (Rochester area), Section VIII (Long Island), Section II (Capital region), etc.
This page currently links only the NYSPHSAA Outdoor State Championship — the marquee meet for the public-school side of NY. PSAL and CHSAA championships, plus per-section results, are coming in a follow-up update that adds support for tier-stratified result links to our schema. For now, NYSPHSAA is below.

PSAL & CHSAA Championships (NYC public + Catholic)
New York’s public-school championship runs through NYSPHSAA (above), but two large statewide systems run their own outdoor track championships separately. PSAL (Public Schools Athletic League) governs NYC public schools and runs the PSAL City Championships at Icahn Stadium each May. CHSAA (Catholic High School Athletic Association) runs the CHSAA New York State Intersectional Championships, also at Icahn Stadium, the same week. Together these two meets cover the bulk of NY high school athletes who don’t fall under NYSPHSAA. Below: every PSAL and CHSAA outdoor championship from 2022–2025.
