The Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) governs track and field with a single open division. All schools — public and private — compete together regardless of enrollment. Athletes must meet qualifying standards to enter the state championship.
The Qualification Pathway
Athletes qualify for the HHSAA State Championship through their league championship meets. Hawaii has five leagues across the islands: OIA, ILH, BIIF, MIL, and KIF.
Single open classification — all schools compete together regardless of enrollment.
5 leagues: OIA (Oahu), ILH (Honolulu private schools), BIIF (Big Island), MIL (Maui), KIF (Kauai).
Athletes must meet HHSAA qualifying standards through league championship meets.
Two-day meet: trials (Day 1) and finals (Day 2) for sprints, hurdles, and relays.
Distance events (1500m, 3000m) and field events may be timed finals.
Hawaii runs the 1500m and 3000m — NOT the 1600m/3200m used by most mainland states.
No javelin is contested at the state championship.
8 places score with points: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.
State meet venue rotates across the islands each year.
How fast does your athlete need to run to qualify for the Hawaii state meet? What did the state champion run? What about the 8th place finisher?
We pulled four years of HHSAA heat sheets and state meet results and put them in one place. Below you'll find the full 1500 Meter Run breakdown — every classification, every year, qualifying standards, state champions, and 8th place finishers. Plus 2025 qualifying standards summaries for every other event.

How to Read This Data
Final Qualifier = the final qualifying mark to make the state meet. This is the minimum mark an athlete needed during the season to earn a berth. 1st Place = the state meet champion's actual result. 8th Place = the 8th place finisher at the state meet.
We show the 1500 Meter Run in full detail below. Sprints, hurdles, relays, and field events are summarized with 2025 standards, and the full breakdowns are in the downloadable package.

Subject: College recruiting resource for our athletes
Hi team families,
I wanted to share a resource that I think will be helpful for families who are thinking about college running.
Next Mile Recruiting is run by Jay Johnson, a former Division I recruiting coordinator at the University of Colorado. He's built a system that helps high school distance runners and their families navigate the college recruiting process — from figuring out what level is realistic to communicating with coaches to understanding the timeline.
It's not a recruiting service — it's a resource. They have a lot of free content and tools that are worth checking out, whether your athlete is a freshman just starting to think about it or a junior getting serious.
I trust his work, and I think you'll find it valuable.
