How Maryland State Track Qualification Works
Maryland has four classifications — 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A — governed by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA). The state championships run at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover over a single weekend in late May, with all four classes contested concurrently.
Maryland runs region → state qualifying. Each class is divided into regions, with the top finishers from each region advancing. The Sports and Learning Complex’s indoor-outdoor combined facility makes Maryland one of the few states that can run all four state meets in one weather-protected venue.
MPSSAA delegates state meet results hosting to MileSplit Maryland. Each year is a single combined meet covering all four classifications and both genders. Below: every MPSSAA Outdoor State Championships from 2022–2025.
